Shay Gap Airport is a small remote airstrip serving the former iron ore mining town of Shay Gap in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. It was established to support fly-in fly-out workers, mining personnel and supplies during the area's iron ore operations.
The town of Shay Gap was built in the early 1970s by the Goldsworthy Mining Company to support iron ore mining, and the airstrip provided a direct air link for the isolated settlement. Mining operations later wound down and the town was largely abandoned in the 1990s, leaving the airstrip with limited use today.
Located about 165 km east of Port Hedland and roughly 90 km northeast of Marble Bar, the airstrip is reached via remote Pilbara roads rather than scheduled public transport. Port Hedland, with its regional airport and services, is the main gateway for onward connections.
Because of its remote setting, travellers should plan road transfers, supplies and fuel carefully. Private transfers, 4WD hire and charter vehicles arranged in advance are the practical options for continuing to Marble Bar, Port Hedland and other Pilbara destinations.
