About Sandy Lake Airport
Sandy Lake Airport is a small community airport serving Sandy Lake First Nation, a remote, fly-in Oji-Cree community in the Kenora District of northwestern Ontario near the Manitoba border. The airport provides the community's principal year-round air connection to regional centers and is maintained and operated by Ontario's Ministry of Transportation.
The airport has a single gravel runway, 11/29, measuring approximately 3,507 feet (about 1,070 metres), and one small terminal building used for domestic passenger services. Scheduled flights are operated by Wasaya Airways and Bearskin Airlines, with connections to Winnipeg, Red Lake, Sioux Lookout and other northern Ontario communities.
Located about 1 km southwest of the community, the airport is only a few minutes by local vehicle from the centre of Sandy Lake First Nation. Because the community has no year-round road access, air travel is essential for residents, supplies, health services and freight.
Facilities at the airport are basic, with a waiting area and limited passenger amenities, and travelers should confirm onward transport in advance. Despite its compact size, the airport plays a vital role in connecting this remote northern community to the rest of Ontario and Manitoba.
