Rutland Plains Airport (RTP)

Rutland Plains Airport is a small private airstrip in far north Queensland, located on Rutland Plains cattle station between the Gulf of Carpentaria coast and the lower Mitchell River. It is not a scheduled passenger airport; instead, it supports station operations, charter flights, general aviation and occasional medical or emergency movements across the remote Cape York Peninsula region.

The airfield sits at an elevation of about 15 metres and operates a single unpaved runway, approximately 977 metres long, with no large terminal building or scheduled airline services. Aircraft are handled from a basic apron area, and all travel must be arranged directly with the relevant operator or station.

The nearest community is Kowanyama, roughly 20 kilometres to the north, while the regional towns of Normanton and Weipa lie well beyond the station on opposite sides of the Mitchell River catchment. Road access is by unsealed outback tracks and can be affected by wet-season conditions, so most visits are coordinated by air or pre-arranged four-wheel-drive transport.

For travellers, the airstrip functions as a practical access point into the lower Mitchell River and Gulf country rather than a commercial terminal. Visitors should confirm landing permissions, fuel and onward transport well before departure.
