About Red Lake Airport
Red Lake Airport is the main air gateway serving Red Lake, Cochenour and the surrounding communities of northwestern Ontario. Located about 6 km north of Red Lake and just 1 km south of Cochenour, it supports scheduled passenger flights, private aircraft and helicopter operators across the region.
The area's commercial air service began in 1926 with a float and seaplane base on Howey Bay, and the airport's gravel runway opened in 1947 with daily Canadian Pacific Airlines service from Winnipeg. The paved runway was later extended, and in October 2011 the modern J.E.J. Fahlgren Terminal opened; it was officially named in 2012.
The airport is owned by the Municipality of Red Lake and operated by Thunder Bay Airport Services. Its terminal houses ticket and rental car counters, luggage carousels, naturally lit seating areas and administrative space, along with a modern parking lot.
Travellers can continue from the airport by taxi, rental car or private transfer to Red Lake, Cochenour, Balmertown and other nearby communities, making it a practical regional entry point for business and leisure travel in Ontario's northwest.
