About RAAF Base Richmond
RAAF Base Richmond is a Royal Australian Air Force base in the Hawkesbury region of New South Wales, about 50 km northwest of Sydney between the towns of Richmond and Windsor. It is one of Australia's oldest and largest air bases. The site hosted a military flying school from 1916 and was established as a RAAF station in 1925.
The base is home to air mobility units including Headquarters Air Mobility Group and No. 84 Wing, and has long supported the RAAF's transport fleet. Its main runway, 10/28, is approximately 2,134 metres of asphalt. In the 1980s the site was considered as a possible second airport for Sydney, but it has remained a military airfield and was confirmed as a long-term base in 2007.
As a working Defence installation, public access and passenger facilities are limited, and the airfield mainly handles military and authorised flights. The base sits close to the Richmond railway line, with road access via Hawkesbury Valley Way.
Travel to central Sydney by road typically takes around an hour depending on traffic, making the base an accessible point for connections across western Sydney, the Hawkesbury and the Blue Mountains.
