Putao Airport (PBU)

Putao Airport is a small domestic airport serving Putao, the northernmost town of Kachin State in Myanmar, in the foothills of the eastern Himalayas. It functions as the main air gateway to the Mount Hkakabo Razi trekking region and Khakaborazi National Park, where overland access is difficult and air connections are the most reliable way to reach the area.

The airport originated as part of Fort Hertz, an isolated British outpost used during the Burma Campaign in World War II, and today operates a single compact terminal and a single asphalt runway. Scheduled domestic services link Putao with Myitkyina, with onward connections from other parts of Myanmar.

Located around 2 km from Putao town centre, the airport is reached in only a few minutes by road. Local motorcycle taxis, private hires and pre-arranged guesthouse or trekking pickups are the main ways to continue into town and onward to lodges and trekking start points.

Because Putao is a regulated region, visitors should arrange travel permits and local hosting before flying, and allow flexibility for mountain weather that can affect flight schedules. Airport facilities are basic, so travelers are advised to carry local currency and essential supplies.
