The airport was developed to serve the mine, which began production in 2009, and is operated by OZ Minerals. It has a single runway aligned 18/36, about 2,200 metres long, and a compact terminal building used for charter check-in, arrivals and passenger facilities.
Because it is a private, visual-flight-rules airfield with no scheduled public airline services, access is typically arranged through charter operators and the mine. The site is reached by road via an unsealed access track from the Stuart Highway, south of Coober Pedy.
For travellers, the airport functions as a practical entry point to the mine and the surrounding outback, with limited but functional facilities and onward connections by road to Coober Pedy, Roxby Downs and other regional destinations.
