About Prince Rupert/Seal Cove Seaplane Base
Prince Rupert/Seal Cove Seaplane Base is a licensed water aerodrome located adjacent to downtown Prince Rupert, British Columbia. It provides floatplane connections between the city and coastal communities, remote locations and charter destinations along the North Coast, and it operates as an airport of entry for border services.
The site has a long aviation history. The RCAF established a base at Seal Cove for fisheries patrols in the 1920s and 1930s, and a flying boat station was completed there in 1941. The facility was handed to the City of Prince Rupert in 1945, and commercial operators such as Queen Charlotte Airlines and Canadian Pacific Airlines later used Seal Cove for scheduled coastal flights before the land airport on Digby Island was developed.
Because the seaplane base sits beside the city rather than on Digby Island, travelers can reach central Prince Rupert quickly by taxi or local road. It is used today by charter and scheduled floatplane operators, including services to Haida Gwaii and other regional destinations.
The compact passenger facility offers a convenient downtown gateway for coastal travel, scenic flights and connections to remote communities, with the city's accommodation, dining and onward transport close by.
