During the Second World War the site was developed as a RAAF station and was home to No. 2 Bombing and Gunnery School, which trained pilots, air gunners and observers. Today the aerodrome retains a practical, compact layout with a three-runway layout, hangars and a small passenger terminal building.
The airport is connected to Port Pirie by sealed roads and has links to Highway One and nearby centres such as Port Broughton and Kadina. Travellers typically continue by private vehicle, rental car or pre-arranged transfer, as regular public transport does not serve the airport.
