About Pambwa Airstrip
Pambwa Airstrip is the main airfield serving Rossel Island, also known as Yela, the easternmost island in the Louisiade Archipelago of Milne Bay Province, Papua New Guinea. The airstrip is located at Pambwa Station and provides an important air link for the island's communities and for visitors travelling to the far southeast of Papua New Guinea.
The airfield opened in 1976 and is used primarily by light aircraft, charter flights and occasional air services rather than large commercial jet operations. It has a single runway and a compact passenger handling area, with arrivals and departures serving domestic travel within Milne Bay Province.
From the airfield, travellers continue by foot, small boat or arranged vehicle to Pambwa village, guesthouses, mission settlements such as Jinya and other coastal communities around Rossel Island. There are no road links to the provincial capital, Alotau, which lies roughly 400 km to the northwest; connections are made by light aircraft or boat.
As a remote island airstrip, Pambwa offers basic passenger facilities, so visitors are advised to plan transfers, accommodation and supplies in advance and to be flexible around weather and aircraft availability.
