About Oombulgurri Airport

Oombulgurri Airport is a small remote airstrip in the eastern Kimberley region of Western Australia, close to the Forrest River and the site of the former Oombulgurri Aboriginal community. The settlement began as the Forrest River Mission in 1913, and the airstrip long served as a vital link for supplies, medical access and residents of one of the state's most isolated communities.

The Western Australian government closed the community in 2011 and relocated its remaining residents, after which the airport was decommissioned and most local infrastructure fell into disuse. The strip remains physically present with a single unpaved runway of about 1,175 metres, but there is no active passenger terminal, fuel supply or scheduled commercial service.

The airport lies about 45 km by air northwest of Wyndham and roughly 120 km from Kununurra. By road, the distance from Wyndham is around 210 km, and the route can be flooded and closed for much of the wet season, so access is usually by light aircraft or boat.

For most travelers, the nearest active aviation hubs are Wyndham Airport and Kununurra Airport, where scheduled services and ground transport are available. Oombulgurri itself should be treated as a remote, restricted location with no public passenger facilities.
