About Oakey Army Aviation Centre
Oakey Army Aviation Centre is a military airfield serving Oakey and the Darling Downs region of Queensland, about 30 km west of Toowoomba and roughly 180 km west of Brisbane. Rather than operating as a commercial passenger airport, it functions as the home of Australian Army aviation training and related defence maintenance and operational activity.
The site has a long military history. It was originally constructed in 1943 by the Royal Australian Air Force as RAAF Base Oakey and used for training and aircraft maintenance, before being transferred to the Australian Army and developed as the Army Aviation Centre from the late 1960s. Today it hosts the Army Aviation Training Centre.
The airfield has several asphalt runways, with its longest runway aligned 14/32 at about 1,649 metres. There are no public passenger terminals or scheduled airline services; aviation movements mainly support military helicopter training and visiting military or pre-arranged civilian aircraft.
Road access is available through the nearby town of Oakey, with connections via the Warrego Highway toward Toowoomba, Brisbane and other Darling Downs destinations. Visitors and personnel typically arrange private transfers, rental cars, chauffeur services or group transport in advance.
