Nuguria Airstrip is the only airfield serving the remote Nuguria Islands, also known as the Fead Islands, in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, Papua New Guinea. The airstrip provides a vital connection for the atoll's small island communities, supporting travel for education, medical services, and the delivery of essential supplies where road and sea links are infrequent.
The airstrip sits on a coral atoll northeast of New Ireland and roughly 150 km from the northern end of Buka Island. It has a single grass runway, numbered 12/30 and about 853 metres long, and a simple open-air passenger shelter rather than a conventional terminal. Access is by charter aircraft, typically arranged through operators flying from hubs such as Buka or Kavieng.
There is no road network on the atoll, so onward travel from the strip is made on foot or by traditional dugout canoe between the islets of the lagoon. Visitors should arrange a local guide or community contact in advance and come self-sufficient, carrying food, water, and supplies, since there are no shops or guesthouses on the islands.
Despite its minimal facilities, Nuguria Airstrip is an essential lifeline for the region and offers a striking introduction to the turquoise lagoon and open Pacific waters that surround this isolated part of Papua New Guinea.
