About Naval Air Station Nowra – HMAS Albatross
HMAS Albatross is the Royal Australian Navy's only air station and largest operational naval establishment, located near Nowra in the Shoalhaven region of New South Wales, about 160 km south of Sydney. It supports Fleet Air Arm flying squadrons and the final stages of aviation training for naval officers and sailors.
The site began as a Royal Australian Air Force base in the early 1940s, was transferred to the Royal Navy and renamed HMS Nabbington in 1944, and was commissioned as HMAS Albatross on 31 August 1948. Today it remains the primary shore base for naval aviation in Australia.
The airfield sits about 6–10 km south-west of Nowra and is reached by road via Albatross Road, close to the Princes Highway. Road travel to Sydney typically takes around two to two-and-a-half hours.
As a military establishment, the airfield is not open to scheduled public passenger services, although it previously hosted a small civil terminal on services between Sydney, Nowra and Moruya until 2004. The adjacent Fleet Air Arm Museum is a notable visitor attraction in the Shoalhaven.
