About Nakina Airport

R. Elmer Ruddick Nakina Airport is a small regional airport serving the community of Nakina and the wider Greenstone area in northwestern Ontario. It supports local travel, charter flights, cargo operations and general aviation, and acts as a connection point for remote communities in the region.

The airport was established during the mid-1930s as part of a federal unemployment relief program that created emergency landing fields along Canada's transcontinental route. It was later named in 1998 in honour of Robert Elmer Ruddick, a well-known local bush pilot.

The facility has a single asphalt runway, 09/27, measuring 3,500 feet (about 1,067 metres), together with a terminal building and fueling amenities. It is located adjacent to Nakina, roughly 60 kilometres from Geraldton and about 350 kilometres northeast of Thunder Bay, with road access via the local highway network.

Passenger facilities are compact, with waiting areas and basic services in the terminal. Charter operators such as ZAM Air provide cargo and charter links to Fort Hope, Ogoki, Lansdowne House and Webequie, making the airport an important northern gateway.
