Mount Isa Airport serves as the gateway to North West Queensland, a mineral-rich region where mining and FIFO travel underpin much of the passenger demand. Located about 8 km from the Mount Isa city centre along the Barkly Highway, it connects the city with Brisbane, Townsville, Cairns and other regional destinations.
Aviation in Mount Isa began in the 1920s with a small aerodrome south of the city, and the airport moved to its current site in 1950 as mining activity expanded. A new terminal was built in 1969, extended in the 1980s, and extensively refurbished in 2000, with further upgrades completed in 2010 and 2022.
The airport operates a single terminal for domestic flights, with check-in counters, a security screening area, departure lounge, baggage claim and car rental desks. Queensland Airports Limited has owned and operated the airport since 2005.
Taxis, local coach and shuttle services, and car hire providers operate from the terminal, while short-term and long-term parking sit close to the building. These connections make it relatively straightforward to continue to Mount Isa's CBD and nearby communities in the North West.
