About Moosonee Airport
Moosonee Airport is the main air gateway to Moosonee, Ontario, and the surrounding James Bay region. Opened in May 1970 and upgraded with a new terminal building in 1991, the public airport is owned and operated by the Town of Moosonee and serves as a vital connection for remote northern Ontario communities.
Located about 4 km from the town centre, the airport operates a single small passenger terminal and handles propeller and turboprop aircraft, along with helicopter traffic from two helipads. Regional carriers link Moosonee with communities including Attawapiskat, Fort Albany, Kashechewan, Peawanuck, Timmins, and Waskaganish.
The airport provides essential scheduled passenger and cargo service in a region with limited road access. Moosonee itself is reached by rail on the Ontario Northland Polar Bear Express from Cochrane, while nearby Moose Factory is connected across the Moose River by water taxi.
Facilities are basic, with passenger services concentrated in the small terminal, and onward travel into town is typically arranged by local taxi or pre-booked transport. Despite its modest size, the airport remains a key regional hub for travel across Ontario's Far North.
