About Mitchell Plateau Airport

Mitchell Plateau Airport is a small remote airstrip in the north Kimberley region of Western Australia, serving the Mitchell Plateau and Mitchell River National Park. It is best known as the air access point for Mitchell Falls (Punamii-Uunpuu), one of the Kimberley's most striking waterfalls, and uses the IATA code MIH and ICAO code YMIP.

The airstrip does not operate as a conventional passenger terminal. Most movements are scenic flights and light aircraft charters from Kununurra and Broome, and the airfield remains accessible by air all year round, which supports dry-season tourism and remote lodge transfers even when surrounding 4WD tracks are closed.

Located about 330 km by air from Kununurra, the main East Kimberley service town, the airport is reached by road only via the 4WD-only Kalumburu Road and Mitchell Plateau track, which are generally open in the dry season. From the airstrip, visitors continue by 4WD or short helicopter flight to Mitchell Falls, wilderness lodges and campgrounds.

Facilities are basic and reflect the airport's remote outback role; nearby accommodation such as the Mitchell Falls Wilderness Lodge and campgrounds provides the services travellers need after arriving. The airport is a practical and important access point for exploring one of Australia's most remote wilderness areas.
