About Misima Island Airport
Misima Island Airport is the only air gateway serving Misima Island, a mountainous island in the Louisiade Archipelago within Papua New Guinea's Milne Bay Province. Located near the island's main town of Bwagaoia on the southeastern coast, the airport provides an essential connection for residents and visitors travelling within the province.
The airport was built after the Second World War and has a single unpaved runway of about 1,200 metres. Scheduled services have historically connected Misima with Alotau, the capital of Milne Bay Province, with onward connections to Port Moresby; however, runway condition issues led to the suspension of regular third-level airline operations from August 2020, leaving the airstrip available mainly for small charter aircraft while rehabilitation work was planned.
The airstrip sits immediately beside Bwagaoia, so travellers can reach the town and nearby villages by a short road journey, while inter-island movement relies on boats and small aircraft. Because the airport is small, facilities are basic and passengers are advised to plan accordingly.
Despite its limited infrastructure, the airport remains a vital link for Misima Island and the surrounding Louisiade communities, supporting travel for families, government services and the island's mining-related activities.
