Miles Airport (WLE)

Miles Airport is the main regional airport serving Miles and the Western Downs region of Queensland. It provides domestic air links, with QantasLink operating regular flights between Miles (WLE) and Brisbane (BNE), and supports Fly-In Fly-Out travel for the Surat Basin gas and resources sector. Located about 12 km south of the Miles town centre off the Leichhardt Highway, the airport serves local residents, business travellers and FIFO workers. The airfield dates to 1942, when it was established as a wartime RAAF strip, and later became a civil aerodrome for the surrounding rural community. A major expansion in 2013 lengthened and strengthened the runway to support heavier turboprop aircraft for FIFO operations, and a modern passenger terminal opened in 2016. The single-storey terminal handles check-in, security, departures and arrivals in one compact building. There is no public transport directly to the terminal, so most travellers use taxis, pre-booked private transfers, rental cars or the nearby car park. The airport also provides a practical gateway for visiting nearby towns such as Chinchilla, Dalby and Roma, and the Miles Historical Village Museum.
