Moorabbin Airport is a general aviation airport serving Melbourne's south-eastern suburbs and the wider Victoria region. Opened in December 1949, it was originally intended to be called Mentone before being named Moorabbin, and it has since grown into one of Australia's busiest general aviation and flight training airports.
Located roughly 21 km south-east of central Melbourne between the suburbs of Heatherton, Cheltenham, Dingley Village and Mentone, the airport mainly handles light aircraft, flight training, private and charter flying. It also hosts the scheduled King Island Airlines service, which operates from a small passenger terminal on First Avenue.
Because it is not a major commercial terminal, passenger processing is simpler and more compact than at Melbourne's Tullamarine Airport. The airport is reached by local roads, taxis, private transfers, car rental and suburban rail connections a short drive away.
