About Mareeba Airport
Mareeba Airport is a public airfield serving the town of Mareeba and the Atherton Tablelands in Tropical North Queensland. Owned and operated by Mareeba Shire Council, it mainly supports general aviation, flight training, charter operations and aircraft maintenance.
The airfield was built in 1942 as a US Army Air Force base during World War II. After the war it developed into a regional aerodrome, and a $23 million upgrade completed in 2019 added infrastructure to support aviation businesses, training operators and local industry.
Located about 8 km south of the Mareeba town centre, the airport has a sealed runway and a compact terminal building that also houses the FNQ Aviation Museum. Hinterland Aviation links Mareeba with Cairns using light aircraft, while the airport also hosts maintenance and agricultural aviation operators.
The airport is reached by road from Mareeba, with private transfers, rental cars and pre-arranged pick-ups used for onward travel to Mareeba, Atherton, Kuranda, Cairns and the wider Tablelands region.
