About Malekolon Airport
Malekolon Airport is a small island airstrip on the western side of Babase Island in the Feni Islands group, part of New Ireland Province in Papua New Guinea. It provides an essential air link for the remote communities of Babase and nearby Ambitle Island.
The airport operates a single grass runway, designated 14/32 and approximately 930 metres long, at close to sea level. Regional services and charter flights connect the airstrip with larger centres such as Rabaul and Kokopo in East New Britain and Buka in Bougainville, and PNG Air is among the carriers that serve the airstrip.
There is no road link between Babase Island and the New Ireland mainland, so onward travel from the airport depends on local boats between Babase, Ambitle and nearby islands, or pre-arranged ground transport within Babase.
Passenger facilities are basic, with a small shelter rather than a conventional terminal. Travellers should confirm flights in advance and arrange food, water and onward transport before arrival, as services on the island are limited.
