Maitland Airport (MTL)

Maitland Airport, also known as Russell Field, is a general aviation airport serving Maitland and the wider Hunter Valley region of New South Wales. Located in the suburb of Rutherford, roughly 5 km from central Maitland, it is owned and operated by the Royal Newcastle Aero Club and functions primarily as a base for private flying, flight training and charter operations.

The airfield has no scheduled airline services, so it is best understood as a general aviation hub rather than a commercial passenger airport. Its facilities are centred on the aero club clubhouse, and the airport operates three runways, including the main 05/23 paved strip, to support light aircraft, training flights and private charters across varying wind conditions.

The airport sits close to Maitland and the Hunter Valley, with Newcastle and its commercial airport a short drive away. Road links make it easy to continue to Maitland town, the Hunter Valley wine region, Cessnock and the wider Newcastle area by taxi or pre-arranged transfer.

While passenger amenities are modest, the airport plays an important role for pilot training, private aviation and charter travel in the region. Visitors and aviators can use the clubhouse facilities, with onward travel typically arranged by private transfer, taxi or hired vehicle.
