Lockhart River Airport (IRG)

Lockhart River Airport is the main airport serving the Lockhart River Aboriginal community and the surrounding Iron Range area on the eastern coast of Cape York Peninsula in Far North Queensland. Located about 800 km north of Cairns, it provides a vital regional air link in a remote part of Australia where road access can be cut during the wet season.

The airport operates a single sealed, all-weather runway of about 1,500 metres with pilot-activated lighting, allowing 24-hour access. A new 100-square-metre terminal completed in 2018 offers a 40-seat seating area, indoor and outdoor waiting areas, secure luggage and air freight space, and accessible toilet facilities. The site dates back to construction by American troops during World War II.

Lockhart River Airport lies about five kilometres from the Lockhart River community. Skytrans provides scheduled passenger flights between Lockhart River and Cairns on weekdays, supported by government, private and charter operations.

Passenger facilities are modest but practical for a small regional airport, with passenger processing and ticketing in the terminal and limited dining and shopping. Travellers should arrange onward transport in advance, as ground transport options in this remote area are limited.
