About Launceston Airport
Launceston Airport is the main airport serving Launceston and northern Tasmania, with regular flights to Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Canberra and the Bass Strait islands. Located at Western Junction, about 15 km south of central Launceston, it is the closest gateway to the Tamar Valley, Cradle Mountain, the east coast and Flinders Island.
The airport opened on 28 February 1931 as Western Junction Aerodrome and has since developed into a compact regional airport. A major terminal redevelopment completed in 2010 added gate lounges and baggage carousels, and a further expansion begun in 2022 has delivered a larger check-in hall, upgraded security screening and improved arrivals and departures areas.
Launceston Airport is owned by Launceston City Council and Australia Pacific Airports Corporation and is served by Jetstar, Qantas, Virgin Australia, Link Airways and Sharp Airlines. Its single main terminal keeps walking distances short and passenger facilities close together.
Road access is straightforward via the Evandale Main Road and the nearby Midland Highway, with taxis, rideshare, shuttle transfers and car rental available at the terminal. There is currently no public bus service to the airport, so pre-booked transfers or a private vehicle are common ways to continue into the city and surrounding regions.
