Koolan Central Airport (KCI)

Koolan Central Airport is a small private aerodrome serving Koolan Island and the surrounding Buccaneer Archipelago in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. It primarily supports fly-in fly-out workers travelling to the Mount Gibson Iron ore mine, along with island logistics and limited regional traffic.

The airport began operating with a new sealed runway in 2020, allowing direct fly-in fly-out flights between Perth and the island using jet aircraft. It has a single asphalt runway, basic terminal and apron facilities, and operates as a domestic, private installation with no international or customs services.

Located around 130 km north of Derby and roughly 1,900 km north of Perth, the island has no road connection to the mainland, so access is by air or sea. Travellers typically reach Koolan Central on charter or fly-in fly-out flights and continue to Derby, Broome or Perth by air before using road transport.

Although passenger facilities are limited compared with major airports, the aerodrome provides essential waiting, baggage and aircraft fuelling services for mine-related travel in one of Australia's most remote coastal regions.
