About Kiunga Airport
Kiunga Airport is a small domestic airport serving Kiunga, a settlement in Lamu County on Kenya's northern coast near the border with Somalia. It provides a vital air link for a remote part of the Indian Ocean coastline where road travel is slow and seasonal.
The airport has a single unpaved runway of around 850 metres and a modest passenger building, and it primarily handles light aircraft and short take-off and landing operations. Services are domestic, connecting the area with other Kenyan destinations.
Kiunga Airport lies about 2 km from Kiunga town. From the airport, passengers can continue by road to Kiunga and, for longer journeys, toward Lamu, which is roughly 85–90 km away by straight-line distance and considerably farther by road.
The airport's role is mainly practical: it supports local residents, visitors and access to the surrounding coastal area and the Kiunga Marine National Reserve. Travelers should plan ground transport in advance, as services in this remote region are limited.
