About Keglsugl Airport
Keglsugl Airport is a small high-altitude airstrip in Chimbu (Simbu) Province, Papua New Guinea, best known as the main air gateway for climbers and trekkers heading to Mount Wilhelm. Set at roughly 2,560 metres above sea level, it is one of the highest operational airstrips in the country and mainly handles domestic charter traffic and occasional scheduled PNG Air services.
The airport consists of a single unpaved, uphill-sloping runway of about 650 metres, suited to short-takeoff-and-landing aircraft. Passenger handling takes place in one basic shelter rather than a conventional terminal, and operations are heavily influenced by mountain weather, with morning flights generally more reliable.
Keglsugl lies in the Gembogl district, with Kundiawa, the provincial capital, roughly 60 km away by road and typically 1.5–2 hours by 4WD. The airstrip reopened in 2018 after rehabilitation, restoring an easier air route for Mount Wilhelm visitors.
From the airstrip, travellers continue by pre-arranged 4WD, local guesthouse transfers or on foot to trailheads, lodges such as Betty's Lodge, and surrounding highland communities. Because on-site services are minimal, visitors are advised to carry cash and supplies and confirm flights locally.
