About Jacquinot Bay Airport
Jacquinot Bay Airport is a small regional airport serving Jacquinot Bay, the Palmalmal government station and the wider Pomio district of East New Britain Province in Papua New Guinea. The airport provides an important air link for a remote coastal area where road access to the rest of the province is extremely limited.
The airfield has a wartime history: it was built in 1944–45 during the Pacific War and later expanded to a coral-surfaced runway of about 6,100 feet. Japanese aircraft were flown to Jacquinot Bay to surrender in September and October 1945. Today the airport has a single runway of about 1,715 metres and a small domestic terminal.
The airport is located roughly 3 km from Palmalmal, the Pomio district administrative centre. Regional and charter flights connect the area with Rabaul, Kokopo and other provincial centres, while Palmalmal and nearby coastal villages are reached by short road or track journeys.
Because it is a remote airstrip, passenger facilities are basic and schedules depend on weather and operator arrangements. Travelers should confirm flights in advance and arrange onward transport, as services to Rabaul and Kokopo are by air or sea rather than direct road.
