Highbury Airport (HIG)

Highbury Airport is a small outback airstrip serving Highbury Station and surrounding cattle properties in Far North Queensland's Gulf Country, within the Shire of Mareeba. Located roughly 280 km west of Cairns, it mainly supports general aviation, charter flights and Royal Flying Doctor Service operations rather than scheduled passenger services. The facility has a single unsealed runway of about 800 metres and basic aviation infrastructure typical of remote Australian cattle-station airstrips. There is no conventional passenger terminal; a simple shelter provides weather protection and supports station operations. Access is by private or chartered aircraft, with movements coordinated locally by station personnel. Onward travel relies on pre-arranged station vehicles or 4WD, as no public transport, taxis or rental car desks operate at the airstrip. Because of its remote setting, travellers should plan arrivals with their charter operator, carry essentials, and arrange fuel and ground transport in advance. The airstrip remains a practical link for pastoral work, supply runs, medical evacuations and access to urban centres such as Cairns.
