Owned and operated by Hay Shire Council, the aerodrome supports general aviation, private charter, corporate and essential services traffic rather than scheduled airline operations.
The airfield has two runways: a main runway designated 04/22 with an asphalt surface measuring about 1,463 m by 30 m, and a secondary clay runway designated 15/33 measuring about 1,140 m by 30 m. The airport sits at an elevation of roughly 92 m.
Located approximately 3 km south of the Hay town centre, the airport is reached by road. Hay itself sits at the junction of the Sturt and Cobb Highways on the Murrumbidgee River, making the town a service centre for the surrounding agricultural region and a practical stopping point for road travellers moving between communities such as Wagga Wagga, Griffith and Deniliquin.
