The airport underwent a major redevelopment completed in 2026, which delivered a new asphalt runway, apron and taxiway, a modern two-level terminal building and upgraded airfield lighting. Gurney Airport is located approximately 13 kilometres from the centre of Alotau. Travelers typically continue by hotel shuttle, Public Motor Vehicle (PMV), taxi, private transfer or rental car, with road travel to town taking around 15 to 25 minutes depending on conditions.
