About Guasopa Airport
Guasopa Airport is a small domestic airstrip serving Guasopa village on Woodlark Island in Papua New Guinea's Milne Bay Province. It functions as the main air gateway for the island and supports travel between Woodlark and the Milne Bay mainland and other parts of the country.
The airfield has wartime origins: it was built by the U.S. Navy's 60th Naval Construction Battalion, the Seabees, beginning on 2 July 1943, and became operational on 14 July 1943 as Narewa Airfield, also known as Woodlark Airfield. It has remained in use and is now known as Guasopa Airport.
The airport has a single runway, designated 12/30, measuring about 1,095 metres and without lighting. A small terminal building handles check-in, arrivals and passenger waiting, reflecting the airport's role as a compact island facility.
Guasopa Airport is located on the southeast coast of Woodlark Island near Guasopa Bay, close to Guasopa village. There is no road connection to the mainland, so onward travel to Alotau and the rest of Milne Bay Province is by air or sea, while local transfers cover movement around Woodlark Island.
