About Gruyere Airport
Gruyere Airport (GYZ) is a private aviation facility serving the Gruyere Gold Mine, one of Australia's major gold-producing operations in the remote Goldfields region of Western Australia. The airport sits in the Great Victoria Desert, approximately 200 km east of Laverton, and exists primarily to support fly-in fly-out workforce movements.
The airport was developed as part of the Gruyere project, with a sealed airstrip built during the mine's construction phase to fly in the workforce. The mine poured its first gold in June 2019, and the airfield has since become the main air gateway for staff, contractors and charter operations. A single sealed runway of about 2,100 metres handles regional jet traffic used for FIFO services.
Because Gruyere Airport is a private mine-site facility, scheduled public flights are not available. Charter services operated by carriers such as QantasLink, Alliance Airlines and Virgin Australia Regional connect the site with Perth in roughly 90 minutes, while the nearest public commercial gateway is Kalgoorlie-Boulder Airport, about 450 km to the southwest.
Facilities at the airport are compact and functional, designed for quick processing of shift-change traffic. A basic terminal provides check-in counters, a sheltered waiting area and flight information displays, with fuller amenities available at the nearby mine accommodation village. Ground transport is restricted to mine-coordinated vehicles.
