About Groote Eylandt Airport
Groote Eylandt Airport is the only air gateway to Groote Eylandt, an island in the Gulf of Carpentaria in the Northern Territory of Australia. Operated by the Groote Eylandt Mining Company (GEMCO), the airport primarily supports the island's manganese mining operation at Alyangula and serves the nearby communities of Angurugu and Umbakumba.
The airport was developed in the mid-1960s to provide logistics for the mining industry and has continued to serve fly-in fly-out workers, residents and visitors. It operates a single compact terminal and one asphalt runway, with regular regional flights linking Groote Eylandt to Darwin.
Located north of Angurugu and about 14 km from Alyangula, the airport is reached mainly by pre-arranged transfers, taxis or rental vehicles, as there is no public bus network on the island. The short drive to Alyangula typically takes around 15 to 20 minutes.
Because the airport is small and domestic-only, check-in and boarding are quick, and facilities are limited to the essentials such as a small waiting area, a kiosk or café and accessible toilets.
