About Gore Bay-Manitoulin Airport
Gore Bay-Manitoulin Airport (YZE) is a certified, year-round airport serving Gore Bay and the wider Manitoulin Island region in Northern Ontario. Built in 1947 as a federal emergency landing location, the airport is now managed by the Gore Bay-Manitoulin Airport Commission on behalf of the municipalities of Gore Bay, Gordon/Barrie Island and Burpee/Mills.
Located about 9 km west-southwest of Gore Bay, the airport provides essential air access to the island for general aviation, charter, corporate and medevac flights rather than scheduled airline service. It is also a seasonal Canada Border Services Agency airport of entry for general aviation aircraft carrying up to 15 passengers.
The airport's modern terminal building was completed in recent years and includes an open lounge with airside views, a meeting and events room, a full-service kitchen, accessible washrooms and a pilot fatigue management centre. A new helipad for medevac operations, an enlarged apron and an emergency generator plant were added as part of the upgrade.
Two asphalt runways serve the airfield: the 5,500-foot runway 11/29 and the smaller 2,615-foot runway 05/23. Travellers can continue from the airport by taxi, private transfer, chauffeur service or rental car to Gore Bay, Little Current and other destinations across Manitoulin Island.
