About Gora Airstrip

Gora Airstrip is a small remote airstrip in Papua New Guinea's Oro (Northern) Province, serving the village of Gora and its surrounding communities. In a mountainous region where road access is largely impossible, the airstrip acts as a vital air link for residents, supplies, medical access and essential travel.

The airstrip has a single grass runway of about 500 metres at an elevation of roughly 761 metres. It is used mainly by small short take-off and landing (STOL) aircraft such as the Twin Otter. There is no formal terminal building; passengers gather under a simple shelter, and operations rely on visual flying conditions and local weather.

Located southeast of Popondetta, the provincial capital, Gora Airstrip connects the area to the wider national network. Most journeys begin or connect through Jacksons International Airport (POM) in Port Moresby, with regional services provided by carriers such as Air Niugini.

Facilities at the airstrip are minimal, with no shops, cafés, restrooms or banking services, so travelers are advised to be self-sufficient. Despite its simplicity, the airstrip remains an important transport link for local communities and for visitors travelling to the region for trekking, research or community work.
