About Fort Albany Airport
Fort Albany Airport is a small regional airfield serving Fort Albany, a Cree community on the west bank of the Albany River near James Bay in northern Ontario. Because the community has no year-round road connection, the airport plays an essential role in moving passengers, medical travelers, freight and supplies.
The airport, which opened in 1972, has a single gravel runway (10/28) of about 1,098 metres (3,601 feet) and one compact passenger terminal. It is operated by the Government of Ontario and handles scheduled turboprop flights operated by Air Creebec to communities such as Kashechewan, Attawapiskat, Moosonee, Peawanuck and Timmins.
The airport sits about 1 km from the community centre, making the connection into Fort Albany a short trip by taxi or local vehicle. During the winter months, the community is also linked by a seasonal winter road to the regional road network.
Despite its small size, the airport provides an important link for residents and visitors, combining essential air service with straightforward onward travel within Fort Albany and to other James Bay coast communities.
