About Elcho Island Airport
Elcho Island Airport (ELC) is the main air gateway to Galiwinku, the largest community on Elcho Island in the Arafura Sea off the coast of Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory. It provides an essential link for residents, healthcare, education and supplies between this remote Yolŋu community and mainland Australia.
The airport lies only about 500 metres from the Galiwinku township and operates as a small regional facility with a single runway and a compact passenger terminal. Regular flights connect Galiwinku to Darwin, often via Maningrida, with charter operators and mission aviation services supporting travel around Arnhem Land.
Because public transport is limited, onward travel from the airport is usually arranged in advance through accommodation providers, hosts or community contacts. Visitors who are not residents of Elcho Island also need to arrange a Northern Land Council permit before travelling.
Despite its small size, the airport is a vital and practical gateway for the island. Travellers should plan ahead for basic terminal facilities, wet-season weather changes and community transport arrangements.
