Cowarie Airport (CWR)

Cowarie Airport is a remote outback airstrip serving Cowarie Station, a cattle station in far north-east South Australia. The airstrip sits on the Birdsville Track, a well-known outback route connecting Marree in South Australia with Birdsville in Queensland, and is used mainly for station operations, private flights and charter access to the surrounding region.

Cowarie Station lies about 216 kilometres north of Marree and roughly 225 kilometres south-west of Birdsville, close to the Channel Country and north of Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre. Because the nearest towns are remote, the airstrip is an important practical link for station access, medical and supply flights, and outback travelers.

The airport has a single dirt runway used by light aircraft, and it does not operate a commercial passenger terminal. Travelers should confirm access, landing arrangements and ground support with the station or their flight operator before travelling, as services in the area are limited.

Road access is via the unsealed Birdsville Track, which is best suited to four-wheel-drive vehicles and can be affected by weather and flooding. For most visitors, flying in is the most practical option, and onward travel should be planned in advance.
