About Colac Airport
Colac Airport (XCO) is a general aviation airfield serving Colac and western Victoria's Otway and dairy region. Operated by Colac Otway Shire, the airfield is located at 235 McKays Road, Irrewarra, about 9 km north-east of the Colac town centre.
The facility was officially opened on 21 November 1976 as the Colac Municipal Aerodrome, following the formation of the Colac Aero Club in 1963. It remains an uncontrolled airfield with no air traffic control tower and provides two runways: a sealed 09/27 strip of about 885 metres and a grass 18/36 strip of about 630 metres.
The airfield supports flight training, private aviation, air ambulance operations and aerial firefighting as a designated fire base. It does not handle scheduled commercial passenger flights, with Melbourne's Avalon and Tullamarine airports providing the nearest regular airline connections.
From the airfield, travellers can reach central Colac by road in around 15 to 20 minutes, and the location offers convenient access toward the Great Ocean Road, the Otway Ranges and surrounding regional towns.
