About Cognac-Châteaubernard Air Base
Cognac-Châteaubernard Air Base is an active French Air and Space Force installation near Cognac in the Charente department of southwestern France. The airfield also supports restricted civil and private aviation, making it a discreet arrival point for travellers visiting the Cognac region.
The airfield was created in 1938 and has served a military role since the Second World War, with the civil terminal added in 1977. Today the base is best known as home to the French fighter aviation school, where student pilots train on Grob G120A and Pilatus PC-21 aircraft.
The airport lies a short distance south of Cognac town centre, on the territory of Châteaubernard, and has two paved runways. It mainly handles military, training and private executive traffic rather than scheduled commercial flights, and prior permission is required for civil operations.
