The airport has been maintained by the District of Chetwynd since 1970, and its current terminal building was constructed in 2008 by Northern Lights College students. A single asphalt runway, 05/23, measures 4,481 feet and is certified for public use with day and night IFR operations.
Chetwynd Airport sits at the junction of Highways 97 and 29, roughly 102 km west of Dawson Creek and about 304 km north of Prince George. This location makes it a practical aviation stop for travelers heading into the Peace River Country and nearby resource areas, although scheduled commercial passenger service is not available.
