About Cape Barren Island Airport

Cape Barren Island Airport (CBI/YCBN) is the small regional aerodrome serving Cape Barren Island, known locally as truwana, in Tasmania's Furneaux Group. It provides an essential air link for the island community, connecting residents and visitors with Launceston and supporting medical, freight and charter operations across Bass Strait.

The airport has an unsealed primary runway of about 1,000 metres plus shorter grass cross strips suited to light aircraft. Scheduled passenger flights are operated by Airlines of Tasmania (Par Avion), typically using small aircraft for the roughly 30-minute journey from Launceston, while the Royal Flying Doctor Service and charter operators also use the field. The airstrip has been improved over time, including drainage and surface upgrades funded through remote airstrip programs.

Located about 3 km from The Corner, the island's main settlement, the airport has no scheduled public transport. Road access is via unsealed island roads, and onward travel is normally arranged in advance with local hosts or community contacts.

Facilities are deliberately modest, with a small terminal building offering basic shelter and limited services. Travelers should confirm flights in advance, as Bass Strait weather can affect schedules, and plan food, water and transport before arriving.
