About Buka Airport
Buka Airport is the main air gateway to Buka Island and the Autonomous Region of Bougainville in Papua New Guinea. Located at the southern end of the island, the terminal sits about 1.5 kilometres from Buka Town.
The airfield's origins date back to December 1941, when Australian troops established a primitive airstrip. It has since become the primary passenger airport for the region, served by a single asphalt runway and a small single-storey terminal building.
The airport handles domestic flights, with Air Niugini and PNG Air connecting Buka to Port Moresby, Rabaul, Kieta and other destinations. It is the only airport in the North Solomons region with regular scheduled passenger service.
Despite its compact size, the airport provides essential check-in, arrivals and waiting facilities, and onward travel to Buka Town and surrounding areas is short and straightforward by road.
