About Boigu Island Airport

Boigu Island Airport is a small regional airport serving Boigu Island, the northernmost inhabited island of Queensland and one of the most remote communities in the Torres Strait. Located only a short distance across the water from Papua New Guinea, the airport provides a vital air link for the island's residents and supports essential services, supplies and medical travel.

Opened in 1981 as the Charlie Gibuma Memorial Airstrip, the airport is operated by the Torres Strait Islands Regional Council. It has a single sealed runway, designated 09/27 and approximately 730 metres long, which is used by light aircraft and small regional turboprops.

The airport sits close to the main Boigu settlement, and the compact terminal offers a basic waiting area with seating and restrooms. Scheduled regional flights, typically operated by carriers such as Hinterland Aviation and Skytrans, connect Boigu Island with Horn Island and other Torres Strait communities, from where travelers can continue to Thursday Island or Cairns.

Because Boigu Island is a remote and restricted Indigenous community, visitors generally need to arrange permits and confirm local travel plans in advance. Ground transport on the island is informal, with walking and pre-arranged pickups being the most common ways to reach the nearby village from the airport.
