About Boang Airport

Boang Airport is a small remote airfield on Boang Island, the northernmost of the Tanga Islands in New Ireland Province, Papua New Guinea. It provides a vital air connection for island communities and is served mainly by light aircraft, charters and mission flights rather than scheduled commercial services.

The airfield has a single unpaved coral-surfaced runway and a modest open-air waiting shelter. Situated roughly 55 to 70 km northeast of mainland New Ireland, it links Boang Island with regional centres such as Kavieng, Namatanai and Rabaul for medical supplies, mail and administrative travel.

There is no road connection to the airport because it is on an island, so access is by light aircraft or boat. Flights operate in daylight under visual conditions, and the surrounding Tanga Islands are reached by sea or by short village transfers.

Facilities are minimal, with no shops, restaurants or lounges, so visitors should travel self-sufficiently and confirm arrangements with local contacts before arrival. The airport remains an essential link for one of Papua New Guinea's most remote island regions.
