Bamu Airport (BMZ)

Bamu Airport is a small domestic airstrip serving Bamu and the Bamu River area in Western Province, Papua New Guinea. It provides essential air links for local communities in a region where road access is limited, making it an important connection point for travel within the province.

The airport sits in a low-lying area near the Bamu River, roughly 40 km northeast of Balimo and about 135 km north of Daru, the provincial capital. It operates a single runway, with flights generally handled by light aircraft operated by regional and charter operators rather than large commercial airlines.

Because roads are scarce across much of Western Province, air travel is a key way for residents and visitors to reach the Bamu area. Longer journeys usually involve connections through larger centres such as Balimo, Daru or Port Moresby, which lies around 465 km to the east.

Passenger facilities at Bamu Airport are basic, and the terminal area is small. Travelers should plan ahead, confirm flight arrangements with their airline and expect simple services, with shops, dining and other amenities available mainly in larger towns.
