About Bairnsdale Airport
Bairnsdale Airport is a certified regional aerodrome serving Bairnsdale and the East Gippsland region of Victoria. The site opened during World War II as RAAF Station Bairnsdale and has operated as a civil airport since the 1950s; several original Bellman hangars from its wartime past remain in use today.
Located about 7 km southwest of Bairnsdale township, off the Princes Highway via Bengworden Road, the airport sits roughly 300 km east of Melbourne. It has two sealed runways and a small passenger terminal used mainly for charter, medical and emergency aviation services.
The airport is an important base for Air Ambulance Victoria, the Victoria Police Air Wing and aerial firefighting support, and is one of the busiest air ambulance locations in regional Victoria. It also supports flight training, charter and recreational flying, and Angel Flight services.
Road access is straightforward from Bairnsdale and the Princes Highway, and the town centre is only a short drive away. The terminal provides seating and a vending machine, with parking directly in front of the building for arriving and departing passengers.
